MLCbids for cash

THE MEAT and Livestock Commission is trying to persuade government to compensate it for the levies lost on cattle over 30 months that are banned from the human food chain.

An official said negotiations were continuing to cover the £4.35 that MLC normally deducts from each beast in levies.

As the animals were not now going for human consumption the MLC could not collect the levy.

The official added that the commission stood to lose about 8% of its income. "That will affect our promotional abilities and with beef at the moment thats the last thing we need," he added.
