MPs call for safeguards on hedges and walls
MPs have called for better protection of hedges, stone walls and other field boundaries.
In a report by the Commons environmental sub-committee, they call current law “confusingly piecemeal and bureaucratic” and “arbitrary and inequitable”.
They called for farmers to be given more cash to repair walls and fences, with farm subsidies dependent on farmers carrying out maintenance.
MPs suggested that more people should be trained to carry out hedge-laying and drystone wall building.
