A STEERING group to establish a Welsh Council has been set up by the National Beef Association after a meeting in Builth Wells, Powys.

About 30 farmers who support the idea of an organisation dedicated exclusively to the interests of beef farmers elected Monmouthshire breeder Avril Evans as chairman. The committee will recruit NBA members and seek nominations for the council itself.

Strong support is expected from producers who are unhappy with the performance of the multi-species livestock committees run by the two Welsh farming unions.

"We are totally focused on beef, it is our only priority," said Robert Forster, NBA chief executive.

"When we advance our arguments we will not be having our shirts pulled by dairy farmers, or anyone else, asking us to soften our position."
