New breeders stake claim in Suffolks at Crosemanor event

By Jeremy Hunt

A TOP price of 5500gns for a ewe lamb, gimmers to 3000gns and a busload of buyers from Belgium marked a successful sale of females from Stan and Robyn Hulmes Crosemanor Suffolk flock.

New buyers keen to source foundation stock of the Suffolks most successful bloodlines competed with the breeds big-guns to put a keen edge to the trade which resulted in 128 averaging £703.

"A successful result and it is encouraging to see new breeders staking a claim in the future of the Suffolk," said Robyn Hulme.

This Shropshire flocks shared ownership of Pankymoor Prelude – the ram whose progeny have a value of more than £1m – has had a big impact and it was a ewe lamb out of a successful show ewe by Prelude which topped the day at 5500gns selling to Jimmy Douglas for his Cairness flock in Aberdeenshire.

The lamb is by Stockton Simply the Best which is 50% owned by Crosemanor and is maternal sister to the 26,000gns Crosemanor Commandeur.

A big crowd kicked off the proceedings in fine style, paying 650gns for a six-crop ewe and kept up the pace throughout. Highest gimmer bid came from B J Griffiths, Twyford, Berks, adding to his new flock. He paid 3000gns for one by Muiresk Marvelle, again out of a Prelude dam. She is full sister to the successful 10,000gns sire Crosemanor Noble.

Mr Griffiths also gave 2500gns for a Prelude ewe lamb, out of a Quintus dam, that was in the second prize wining group at the 1998 Royal Show.

There were 25 sheep bought for flocks in Eire and seven others were bound for Belgium. A convoy of trailers and a minibus full of breeders made the trip over from Belgium for the sale.

Another big buyer taking 16 foundation females was Alec Fox, Rugeley, Staffs, well known to many from his time in the feed industry.

His most expensive was 1000gns paid for the two-crop Prelude ewe bred from the famous Barrons Allsquare family and in-lamb to the 12,000gns Stockton Stardust.

Other top bids included 1800gns from Shropshire breeders R B and P J Draper for a gimmer by Noble and in-lamb to Stardust and 1500gns from Roger Weaver to add a ewe lamb to his Perrinpit flock by Cairness Kosta and from the Allsquare family.
