New leader at Kentish reins

KENT Farm Womens Club has had a changeover of contact leaders.

Dorothy Highwood has stood down to let Marlene Wright take over. I am amazed that Dorothy has carried on organising meetings for the last 17 months as she is one of those unlucky people whose home was flooded back in the autumn of 2000 and she and her husband Pete are still not back living there.

Marlene moved to Kent 25-years ago; she and her husband have never farmed but in the true spirit of FWC were welcomed into the rural community and have enjoyed the friendship the club brings for 15 years or more.

I am sure this club in the Garden of England is in very good hands and the many outings and meetings planned will be a great success. Marlene has four grandchildren to keep her on her toes and also does upholstery and French polishing when she has time.

The day I joined them we visited the Royal Engineers Museum at Gillingham – a great day out, so interesting for me, the daughter of a sapper – I grew up learning about Bailey Bridges and having to have a shine on my shoes!

We lunched at the home of Rita and Alan Veitch – a merry gathering of members and their husbands, pleased to mix with anyone no matter what their method of earning a living may be. Jean Howells
