New leader, same spirit for Gloucester livewires

WERE all friends here" was the message that came over loud and clear at a recent meeting of Gloucestershire FWC. There has been a change over of contact leaders and Phyllis Charter and her two helpers, Sue Baber and Ann Littleton have retired after six years of great efficiency and humour.

The club continues to be in good hands as Anne Jewell has taken over and will be assisted by Di Merrick and Ann Burcher.

Anne is a vivacious lady, full of fun as proved in a photo I have of her swinging from the branches of a chestnut tree. I will not be printing it here as I would like to remain on good terms with her! She and her husband David farm 57ha (140 acres) growing wheat as well as doing contract work and Anne also devotes one day a week to FWAG. They have two grown up children, Sarah and Simon, who are in their twenties.

I am sure this lively Gloucester group will go on forever as Anne and her friends have known one another since they were 16-years-old and in the Young Farmers Club. They still have so much in common.

It is such a shame that these days the friendships made at YFC seem not to be carried on into another social organisation such as FWC. Where do all the YFC members go once they reach the age of 30? Surely once they reach this milestone they have got over the "chilling out" stage and want to be out there enjoying new experiences and challenges with like-minded friends.

If you are nearing this stage of your life and dont want to lose touch with your friends why not set up a group (for both sexes) affiliated to FWC, which could improve your social life and also that of your partners and children. If the idea appeals to you please write to me, Jean Howells, at farmers weekly, Quadrant House, The Quadrant, Sutton, Surrey SM2 5AS or email jean.howells@rbi.co.uk for advice on how to get started.
