New rules for GMO labelling
NEW rules for labelling and tracing genetically modified products have been proposed by Brussels, which could kick start the stalled approvals process.
Following months of delay, the commission finally agreed the new procedures late on Wednesday (July 25).
The system will require the clear identification of GMs at all stages of the food chain, including products derived from GMs. Compound feed will also have to state whether it contains GMs. *
Mr Byrne was hopeful that, once the new labelling rules are approved, member states will agree to lift the moratorium that has held up all new GM approvals for almost three years.
