New sow housing suppliers swamped

AN UPSURGE in inquiries on alternative sow housing from pig producers is overstretching equipment suppliers.

ADAS pig team manager Sue Corning says that with the ban on stalls and tethers is under two years away, many producers have decided to approach equipment suppliers since Christmas.

"Many of these producers are looking to the suppliers as a first point of call in the decision process," says Dr Corning.

"But the first step is to adopt a structured approach to converting the unit with an assessment of the business condition and what type of alternative is suitable."
