New US meat safety bill heads for Congress


US Agriculture Department officials refused to discuss details of a new meat
safety bill. Agriculture secretary Dan Glickman indicated it would be submitted
to Congress next week.

The government wants the authority to mandate recalls of meat and to impose
civil penalties of more than $100,000 (£62,000) a day for violations.
