NFU conference places farming at heart of economy

More than 900 delegates are due to attend the NFU’s annual conference in Birmingham.

The two-day event at the Hilton Metropole Hotel has the theme “Farming at the heart of the economy”.

NFU vice-president Gwyn Jones said: “This year’s conference has attracted more than 900 delegates and is a complete sell-out.

“It promises to be an exciting couple of days, with the focus firmly on farming being at the heart of the economy.”

Politics and business will be the focus on day one (Tuesday, 15 February).

NFU president Peter Kendall will open the morning session.

DEFRA Secretary of State Caroline Spelman will deliver the keynote address.

Other speakers on the first day include HSBC chief economist Dennis Turner

NFU deputy president Meurig Raymond will lead an afternoon debate on the business challenges for agriculture in a global market.

The second day starts will start with a series of workshops, including an update on the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP).

Speakers will include farm minister Jim Paice and the government’s chief veterinary officer Nigel Gibbens.
