NFU names less-favoured areas chairman

CUMBRIAN farmer Peter Allen has been appointed chairman of the National Farmers Unions less-favoured areas committee.

The position became available after the previous chairman, Tim Bennett, was elected joint deputy president of the NFU at the organisations AGM earlier this month.

Mr Allen, 47, runs a 2,000-acre farm at Bampton near Penrith, which holds 1,600 Swaledale ewes and 60 suckler cows, three quarters are of which are Limousin.

Mr Allen has been vice-chairman of the committee for the past four years.
