Nitram award winner of 95
NORTHUMBERLAND farmer Ian Brown is winner of the 1995 ICI Fertilizers Nitram award for best fertiliser practice.
FWs barometer farmer for the north, Mr Brown, who farms at Lee Moor, near Alnwick, beat four regional finalists with his successful cereals system and integrated wildlife programmes.
The 100-plus entrants were judged on farm profitability, agronomic practices and conservation work, explains commercial manager Stuart Beer.
Wide field margins, good crop records, soil analysis, a LEAF audit, pneumatic spreading with tray calibration and environmental care within day-to-day operations marked Mr Brown as outright winner.
His award was presented by the Duke of Gloucester on Tuesday. The prize included £3500 sponsorship from ICI Fertilizers and FWAG advice to continue the farms environmental programme.
Other regional finalists were:
West: Arthur Hill, Newtown House Farm, Much Wenlock, Shropshire.
East: Roger Young, Carbrooke Hall Estate, Thetford, Norfolk.
South: Laurence Wadman, Elliscombe Farm, High Holton, Somerset.
Scotland: Zandy Izat, Higher Cocklaw, Berwick-on-Tweed.
