Nitrate action court threat

BRUSSELS is threatening to take the UK government to court over its failure to draw up suitable action plans for protecting water supplies from nitrate contamination.

The EU Commission has also accused the UK of focusing exclusively on drinking water, whereas the intention is for all water to be covered by the new legislation, which takes effect from 1999.

As such, pressure is mounting for government to widen the coverage of the nitrate vulnerable zones.

increasing the number of farmers who will have to abide by strict codes of practice and action plans.
