No Lindane, Co-op tells suppliers

THE CO-OP has revealed it is writing to all its suppliers to ask them not to use Lindane as a treatment for any produce sold in its stores.

At the same time CWS farms is bringing the limited use of the chemical, which was banned as a seed treatment last year, to an immediate end. CWS farms over 34,400ha (85,000 acres).

Mounting concern

The move comes amid mounting concerns over the effect of the chemical on human health.

"With Lindane now banned in a number of European countries and serious questions about its safety being raised by consumer and environmental groups, the time is right to act," said a spokesman.
