No reserve rule helps push bids to 12,000gns at Crewe

A "NO reserve" rule and a bevy of cattle from some of the worlds most fashionable Holstein sires proved a winning combination at the Semex Reflections sale at Crewe, where prices reached 12,000gns.
A packed ringside of breeders from throughout the UK competed vigorously for all age groups, the no reserve rule encouraging buyers to go that extra step in an effort to secure stock of this calibre.
Lancashire breeder Alan Swales Joylan Farms year-ling heifer Joylan Rudolph Rox generated the most interest and put trading into top gear. She reached 12,000gns to Groby Lodge Farm Estate, Groby, Leics.
By Startmore Rudolph and out of the 13,800kg great breeding cow Bond Haven Dixie Rox, she has a Pedigree Index of 981, PIN +£83 and ITEM +£91. Her dam has served Joylan well – a host of progeny include the 8000gns Joylan Blackstar Roxie and Joylan Renaissance, the herds current senior stock bull.
Kaymanor Broker Tiana, from J R and S E Dickinson, Doncaster realised 10,000gns to BB Holsteins, Usk, Gwent, although the vendors bought back a half share. This 1993-bred Broker cow is out of an Astro Jet dam and was served in November to Starbuck. She has a Pedigree Index of 720, PIN +£35 and ITEM +£36.
Tiana has had an impressive show career and was Honourable Mention All-Britain Intermediate Cow and Reserve Champion Four-Year-Old HFS Classic 1997. Her best yield to date was 11,300kg with her second calf.
The Apr 1996-bred heifer Uphall Raider Cherish, by Han-overhill Raider and out of Shore-mar Cherish Broker, heads for the Kilton herd of T Bradley and Son in Nottinghamshire at 5000gns.
She was first junior heifer and reserve junior champion at the Royal Show last year.
