No set-aside, no penalty

GUARANTEED set-aside can now be dropped without penalty, thanks to the UK ministrys implementation of changes agreed in Brussels.

"Its quite useful. It gives growers an extra 8% of land for spring cropping," comments Andrew Fundell of land agent Browns in Norwich.

But anyone also in the countryside access scheme must keep land in guaranteed set-aside for five years, he notes. The same applies where woodland grants have been claimed.

MAFF is preparing forms for the switch to flexible or rotational set-aside – they should be available in January. &#42
