No to EUaid cuts

EU FARM ministers roundly rejected Commission proposals to cut area aid by 7% and set-aside payments by 27% when they met in Brussels this week.

Belgium and Germany led the assault, arguing arable cuts could not be justified when grain prices had fallen, when the 1998 budget was still unclear and when more fundamental review of the beef, cereal and dairy regimes was to be considered later this year.
