Norsk Hydro eyes up Thai potash

NORSK Hydro, the worlds biggest fertiliser producer, is joining the $550 million Udon Thani potash project in north-east Thailand.

The Norwegian group has signed a memorandum of understanding with Asia Pacific Resources, a small Vancouver-listed company, for a shareholding in the project and to take all the production from the Samboon mine.

Samboon is expected to produce an annual 2m tonnes of potash – the main source of potassium, a vital nutrient for plants and animals. This represents about 5% of todays output.
