Northern Ireland beef exports halted

THE export of Northern Ireland beef has been suspended by the Department of Agriculture in the province following problems with the cattle tracing system.

Difficulties with the system emerged during a visit by European inspectors last week.

A fault resulted in the export of meat from 19 cattle not eligible to be sent abroad.

The inspectors have asked for new security measures to be implemented immediately.

The measures, including the double tagging of cattle, were not scheduled to have been implemented until September.

Northern Irelands much vaunted tagging system was one of the main reasons why the export ban was lifted in Ulster last year ahead of the rest of the UK.
