but spirit unbowed

QUALITY of the cattle entries and exhibitor enthusiasm made up for a shortfall in numbers, and no sheep and pig classes, at this years 118th Lincolnshire Show.
But regular exhibitors to the Grange-De-Lings, Lincoln showground were not going to let strict DEFRA biosecurity rules governing the showing of cattle put them off.
"We have been coming to the show for 20 years and were determined to come this year to get the classes established again," said Shirley Winter, whose Holstein Corringham Integrity Starle, bred and shown by her Lincs family, took the supreme dairy title.
Judge Peter Prior commended the three-year-old, by Robtham Integrity and out of a Broker dam, for the height and width of its rear udder and rear teat position.
New to the show, to give recognition to younger animals, was a junior supreme dairy championship, won by a Jersey, the Saxby familys Centurions Fancyfree.
"She had the advantage over the Holstein due to her style and dairyness through the front end," said Mr Prior.
In the beef lines, top honours for both the overall supreme title, and the junior supreme, went to Banbury, Oxon-based Limousin breeder Smiths of Bloxham.
Farm manager John Wilson collected the interbreed beef title with their cow Crowhill Orrannoe, and the junior supreme with their bull Ironstone Spartacus.
The reserve interbreed went to the Leics based Webb familys Charolais cow Rushfield Nightingale.
