MINISTERS will announce their decision on Nitrate Vulnerable Zone designations for England within the next two months, junior DEFRA minister Michael Meacher has promised
In reply to a written Parliamentary question, Mr Meacher said responses to the consultation on the options put forward were being analysed. These would be published along with the governments decisons in May 2002.
The consultation asked farmers whether 80% or 100% of England should be classified as an NVZ. Mr Meacher said the measures would come into force from Dec 19, 2002. *
But he admitted that a number of respondents to the consultation have expressed concern about the costs of implementing the directive.
"A large majority of those raising concerns were from the farming industry," he said.
