Oats take step up
NO new conventional winter oats have come on to the Recommended List this year, but two naked types from the part HGCA-funded Welsh breeding programme at Aberystwyth are provisionally recommended.
Krypton and Lexicon both represent a big step up in yield over fully recommended Harpoon, says Ethel White of the Department of Agriculture Northern Ireland.
Krypton has a slight edge in terms of output, but is weaker-strawed. Both are reasonably early, and equally winter hardy and mildew resistant. But Lexicon is also resistant to stem eelworm, and information to date suggests it is the better of the two against crown rust, she says. "Lexicon also has the best specific weight."
