Odour objectors fail to peg pig plan

A NORTH Yorkshire pig farmer was celebrating this week after being told he can go ahead with plans to build a new pig unit.

Ron Wilson applied to the North York Moors National Park last summer for permission to build an extra finishing unit for 750 pigs at Stiltons Farm, near Helmsley.

But the application was turned down after claims from residents and local shopkeepers that smells from Mr Wilsons farm regularly drifted over Helmsley. Extending the unit would be environmentally unacceptable and threatened the towns tourist industry, they argued.

But after a public inquiry in March Department of Environ-ment inspector John Gray ruled that Mr Wilson could proceed with his scheme.

Unusually, Mr Wilson, has been awarded costs. His solicitor John Downing said: "We are very happy with the outcome." &#42
