Official aid for fertiliser work

THE government is to fund research on the pathogen levels contained in all organic fertilisers, including farmyard manure, to establish the contamination risks for human food.

Responding to the House of Commons environment committees report on sewage treatment and disposal, environment minister, Michael Meacher, said the public was concerned about the possible transfer of pathogens to food from organic waste. As a result, he had ordered a structured research programme and risk assessment.

He also announced that the spreading of untreated sewage sludge would be phased out as soon as possible. &#42
