THE big supermarkets are to face an investigation by the Office of Fair Trading (OFT) into whether their domination of the £93 billion grocery market is bad for consumers.

The move follows concerns raised about the supermarkets buying power in a report by the Welsh Affairs Committee. This looked at the crisis in Welsh farming focusing on beef and lamb prices.

John Bridgeman, director-general of fair trading, said it was time to take a closer look at the sector because its been 15 years since the Monopolies and Mergers Commission (MMC) carried out study into supermarkets.

The main worry is whether lower prices from suppliers are being passed on to consumers.

The OFTs preliminary investigation will take until the end of the year. An in-depth inquiry by the MMC could then be launched.
