OK for CSgrassland
GRASSLAND included in Countryside Stewardship Schemes is not being allowed to deteriorate and become infested with weeds, according to Peter Carey of the Centre for Ecology and Hydrology, Cambs.
A survey of 451 Countryside Stewardship sites showed the vast majority were not weedy. About 50% of agreements were classified as good in terms of management, while 28% were rated as bad.
Mr Carey said it had been suggested that CS targeted land of poor quality and was wasting public money, but a review had shown it had incorporated land of above average quality. *
