One-crop ewe takes world top to 17,000gns

By Jeremy Hunt

A WORLD record price for a ewe was paid at Perth last weekend when a one-crop female from the Cairness flock of Sandy Douglas sold for 17,000gns.

The day also saw a ewe lamb record of 10,000gns achieved by John Sinnett, Stockton-on-Teme, Worcs.

The ewe, by the breeds top sire Pankymoor Prelude and out of a dam by Fordafourie Lochnagar, bred last years Kelso ram lamb record-breaker which sold for £23,000. In-lamb to Stockton Statesman, the ewe was bought by Kenny and Bruce Mair for their Muiresk flock at Turriff, Aberdeenshire.

Overall, the Cairness flocks 50 gimmers averaged £1442 to contribute to a days takings of just short of £100,000 for Mr Douglass 65 sheep. Cairness stock were part of a joint offering from Stockton (John Sinnett, Worcs) and Bridgestone (Jimmy Wilson, Aberdeenshire).

Two other gimmers from Cairness made 4500gns. One by Prelude and out of a Crosemanor Constructor dam went to Ronald Walker, Appleby, Cumbria. And a gimmer by the 26,000gns Cairness Court and in-lamb to Stockton Slocum was one of several high-priced sheep that have been heading for the Solwaybank flock of Iain Barbour in Dumfriesshire this autumn.

John Sinnett paid 4200gns for a Cairness gimmer by Prelude and Mr Barbour was in again at 4200gns to claim another from this consignment.

Tom Bailey, Co Meath, has been making some hefty investments in recent weeks to add stock to his Glenho flock and achieved a new record when he gave 10,000gns for a ewe lamb.

The lamb, from John Sinnetts Stockton flock, is by Cairness Court and out of a Muiresk Aston Martin ewe. It was first prize ewe lamb at this years Royal Highland Show.

Mr Bailey also paid 4000gns for a Stockton gimmer and 3200gns for a Stockton one-crop ewe.
