Option seed doing well

OPTION winter wheat seed crops are doing well says Matthew Philips of John Ebbage Seeds based in Downham Market: “Were seeing some storming yields.”

One grower yielded 11.4t/ha (4.65t/acre), with a specific weight of 76kg/hl. He says there are large areas of the seed being grown for them, ready for its first full commercial year next year.

Claire, Consort and Hereward are also yielding well. He says they have only seen 10% of samples so far. He expects that to rise to 50% by the end of the week.

“Some samples have germination problems, with grains starting to sprout. These have been from Yorkshire, Leicestershire and in Suffolk.”
