GOVERNMENT is to allow an 80% increase in numbers of overseas students allowed to work on UK farms under the seasonal agricultural workers scheme.
Junior home office minister, Baroness Blatch, said government accepted that the schemes present quota of 5550 fell short of the industrys needs.
"We have, therefore, decided that from the 1997 season that quota will be increased to 10,000, which represents a rise of more than 80%," she added.
"We believe that that will substantially increase the number of people legally entitled to do seasonal agricultural work." *
