Overseas OTMS loophole closed

BRUSSELS has stepped in to stop Continental beef exporters from taking advantage of the UKs over 30-month cattle slaughter scheme.

According to commission officials, older cattle have been shipped into the UK to pick up compensation, now valued at 73p/kg lw.

To prevent this, EU market managers have increased the period for holding imported cattle in the UK from three to six months.

The Meat and Livestock Commission has welcomed the move, saying it should discourage animals not bred in the UK going into the OTMS.n
