Peas poised to dodge footrot
FOOTROT tolerant varieties of combining and vining peas are expected within three to five years.
Foot rots caused widespread, severe damage in the wet 1998 season.
Trouble was particularly bad where drainage of soil in the rooting zone was impeded as rotting is triggered when roots are starved of oxygen for 48 hours.
PGRO is keen to find varieties which can cope better with root diseases. Already, after just a single years work, some have been spotted which are less at risk than others. *
