Pesticide tax on the cards, says Dane
BRITISH arable producers could soon face a new bill in the shape of taxes on pesticide use, according to a Danish farm consultant who attended a recent Cambridge crops conference.
Jakob Khaersgaard said a similar tax was imposed on Danish farmers in 1986 when the Government tried to cut pesticide usage and nitrate leaching by 50% over 10 years.
The Ecotec consultancy, working for the Department of Transport, Environment and the Regions, is currently considering the mechanics of applying at tax on pesticides in the UK.
The British Agrochemical Association has warned that such a measure could be introduced as early as next April.
