PICTURES: Farmers still facing problems caused by 2008’s weather

Farmers are still battling on with jobs that in most years would have been completed weeks ago.

Farmers Weekly has been sent a number of pictures which show that the legacy of last year’s appalling summer is still being felt.

Steve Rowland sent us these pictures of maize harvesting down in Cornwall on 5 January.

“I was part of the team working for Phil Strout contractors harvesting the maize for Paul Holdaway of Hennaford Farm, Welcome Cross, on the Devon/Cornwall border,” he said.

“It was a bit of a salvage operation really as crop was completely laid flat in what was our lovely summer. We cut 23 acres in total.”

Matthew Brown who works on a farm in Oxfordshire sent us these shots of a John Deere 7530 with a Horsch 4 metre seed drill stuck on New Years Day 2009.

Matthew told FW that frosts had enabled them to get the land ploughed, but it had warmed up a little when they tried drilling with this being the result.
