Pig feed could quell Delhi belly
A CEREAL bar developed from pig feed could safeguard travellers against stomach upsets, according to a report in The Daily Telegraph.
The product, Cellulac, is currently being produced to replace antibiotics which are used in pig feed.
Antibiotics are being banned in animal feed from the end of June because of fears that they stimulate the growth of resistant “superbugs”.
Cellulac works by encouraging the friendly bacteria to grow in the animals gut by up to 100 times, thus preventing harmful bacteria from becoming established.
The Rowett Institute in Aberdeen, which is working on making the product commercially available, says if it works for pigs it should work for man too.
