Pig group wants bioengineering accord

THE Cotswold Pig Development company is calling on the government and academics to set the ground rules governing animal bio-engineering, research and development.

Jim Webb, director of science and genetics at the group, said a framework needs to be set so that companies can plan their investments.

Mr Webb said new technologies offered the potential of developing pigs which could double their growth rate and triple their ham rate.

Semen sexing could eliminate the problems created by differential feeding of male and female offspring, he said.
