Pig men demand welfare labels

PIG farmers want imported pigmeat labelled to state it is produced under welfare standards illegal in Britain.

Farmers protesting at the Norfolk headquarters of Danepak and Tulip International claimed imported meat often did not meet these standards, reports Radio 4s Farming Today

While this is not illegal, protest leaders said this should be clearly stated on packaging.

It was suggested that wording should state the meat was “foreign pigmeat from production systems which are illegal in the UK”.

Tulip International said virtually all the pigmeat it imports has been produced in systems equivalent to those used in the UK.
