Pig scheme would be benchmark – Safeway

SAFEWAY would welcome the introduction of one single fully integrated quality assurance scheme covering food safety.

Speaking at the fw Farmer Forum Beef – managing our way out of a crisis, the supermarkets Nigel Garbutt said traceability of cattle should be a key part of that farm assurance.

Mr Garbutt said his company would adopt an industry run scheme provided it met an agreed common set of standards that would act as a baseline for British meat. Safeway would then differentiate its brands with additional quality parameters.

Mr Garbutt suggested FABPIGS – the quality assurance scheme for British pigs – was a single, independently-monitored scheme which could form a useful benchmark for other sectors.
