Pigs: Look elsewhere

WITH Malton suppliers being asked to accept yet another pricing structure and a new price of about 62p/kg, pig producers must assess other supply opportunities.

Bury-based consultant Peter Crichton advises actively researching opportunities to supply other buyers, but that must start with establishing whether their current contract is legally binding.

"Most producers are NFU members and should make use of its free legal aid scheme to find out whether their supply contract is legally binding. No producer can afford to lock into a contract offering about 60p/kg, but evaluate your options carefully," he warns.

New Year shortfall?

Suggesting there will be a shortfall of about 30% of pigs early in the New Year, Mr Crichton says buyers will be looking for supplies. If early rises in the spot market continue, theres an opportunity to increase income, he says.
