Pink veal claim

WELFARE-FRIENDLY British pink veal can be made paler than imported Dutch white veal, claims the Meat and Livestock Commission.

Its colour measurement trials show specially treated British veal was up to 22% whiter than imported Dutch veal. Veal from the Netherlands and France accounts for 95% of the British market. British veal was more tender than Dutch veal, MLC meat quality specialist Alastair Cuthbertson told a meeting of catering butchers in Milton Keynes.

How British veal is turned white will remain secret until next weeks meeting of the MLC.
