Pipe away the effluent
A 75mm (3in) plastic land drainage pipe placed on the floor against the silage clamp wall is effective at removing silage effluent, says Guy Singleton of land agents Carter Jonas, Marlborough, Wilts. The pipe will also reduce pressure on silo walls.
"This is not critical for unlined sleeper-walled clamps but well recommended when silo walls are concrete-panelled or lined," he says.
To prevent air getting into the clamp and causing aerobic spoilage Mr Singleton suggests using solid pipe for the last 1.83m (6ft) and blocking off the pipe with a bung when effluent has drained out. *
