Plough match hit

THE British National Ploughing Championships is the latest casualty of the foot-and-mouth crisis.

The event, organised by the Society of Ploughmen was due to be held at a site near Penrith, Cumbia on Oct 6 and 7.

Because of further F&M outbreaks to the east of the site in recent weeks, DEFRA declined permission for the event to go ahead, said Ken Chappell, executive director of the Society of Ploughmen. "DEFRA said it was unable to make a decision for six to eight weeks at the earliest. This late date would make it impossible to organise the event properly," said Mr Chappell.

Next years event is scheduled to be held near Doncaster, S Yorks on Oct 12 and 13. &#42
