Police pull over tractor for driving on motorway

Police have pulled over a tractor seen driving along the M54 motorway.

The vehicle was stopped on 9 February by officers from the Central Motorway Police Group (CMPG), which covers West Midlands, West Mercia and Staffordshire police forces.

Police said they escorted the John Deere tractor off the motorway before dealing with the driver.

It was stopped after being seen driving westbound between junction two for Wolverhampton and junction one, close to where the motorway joins the M6.

The CMPG posted a photo of the vehicle on Twitter.

A CMPG spokesman said: “For any aspiring farmers out there, tractors are prohibited from being driven on motorways.”

Rule 253 of the Highway Code prohibits certain slow-moving vehicles and agricultural vehicles from using the motorway.

The CMPG area stretches from the Welsh borders to the northern border with Cheshire – covering some 400 miles of motorway as well as a mix of urban and rural areas.

Police have stopped a number of tractors in road-related incidents this month.

In Yorkshire, police stopped a 15-year-old youth driving two drunk friends in a tractor without lights at 5am in the morning.

And in Cheshire, police seized an unisured tractor with front-end loader in the Taporley area.

In Natwich, police issued a tractor and trailer driver with a £100 fine for failing to display a rear numberplate.
