Polish Peasants Party courts farmers

THE Polish Peasants Party is canvassing on a platform of protectionism. It is attempting to appeal to farmers who fear a deluge of imports, especially with EU accession.

Polish farmers are worried about interest-rate increases, fuel-price hikes and agricultural imports which are depressing prices on the domestic market. There is also cynicism about European Union (EU) membership.

Solidarity Electoral Action said it would protect farmers from “dishonest” competition.
