Poor global prospects for beef

PROSPECTS of any let-up in depressed market for beef have been dealt a blow by the international exporting arm of a billion-dollar meat-exporting group.

John Brook, managing director of Sogeviandes, said the combination of BSE and financial crisis in Russia and Asia would continued to caused major problems.

An prospect of further European beef exports to Third World countries at present were virtually nil, he said.

Beef remains a discretionary buy which can easily be dropped from the shopping list, he told the Meat and Livestock Commissions Annual Outlook conference.

But the European market could offer the possibility of growth if producers invested in quality and product development, he added.
