Poor wheat yields
ROBERT TALLIS, who farms at Frolesworth, between Lutterworth and Leicestershire, is reporting disappointing wheat yields.
But, weather permitting, he may finish in three days: “Im sitting in the sunshine waiting for it to dry after showers yesterday [16 August].”
He started combining wheat on Monday. “Lloyd durum wheat was diabolical. It yielded 1t/acre (2.5t/ha). It went into a dire seedbed and when we harvested it there was nothing there.”
Malacca milling wheat was also disappointing. It yielded about 7.4t/ha (3t/acre). “It is the first year weve grown it. We normally expect 4t/acre (9.9t/ha) from milling wheat.”
The moisture has been between 14-15% and he says he has not had to dry anything this harvest.
Winter oats Jalna has yielded 7.4t/ha (3t/acre) and Fortress oilseed rape yielded 3.2t/ha (1.3t/acre). “I reckon every crop has yielded at least 0.5t/acre (1.2t/ha) less this season. We expected a poor harvest and it was delivered.”
