Portugal starts cull
PORTUGAL is to slaughter at least 2550 cattle in its attempt to eradicate BSE.
The slaughter programme is expected to last a month at an estimated cost of £1.7m, 70% of which will come from the EU, according to a report in Animal Pharm magazine.
There have been 36 cases of BSE in the country, spread over 25 farms, and Portugal plans to slaughter all cattle on farms where BSE has been identified. That will involve 917 animals. *
