IRON supplements are effective in preventing pre-weaning anaemia in lambs and should be considered for all flocks which rear lambs indoors during their first seven to 10 days.
That was the finding of Laura Green and colleagues at the University of Bristol and reported in Veterinary Record, Mar 1, 1997.
Treated lambs received an injection of 300mg iron dextran at one day old. Blood at about 12 to 24 days showed improvements in cell haemoglobin. Mortality was lower and weight significantly higher at weaning in the treated group compared with the control. *
