Prices of imported bull semen slashed

GENUS has slashed the semen prices of imported bulls in its dairy stud.

Top bull prices have dropped the most, with Jabot down £17 to £38, Labelle £12.50 to £25, Besne £4.50 to £27.50, Lexus £5.50 to £27.50, and Sunny Boy down £3 to £25. World demand for top bull Mascot (see table) means its price remains at £60.

Genuss John Berry says: "Genus is maintaining its margins – the price reductions reflect the competitiveness of the world market." He says negotiating strength has allowed it to buy well for 1996.

Breeding consultant John Hinks sees the price reductions as a welcome move. "For far too long the asking price for imported semen has been too high," he reports in his latest Sire Register.

Dr Hinks predicts the move could force a long overdue price war among global and domestic supply agencies.

It could also allow a heavier uptake of better quality genetic material.
