Prodi promises action against France

ROMANO PRODI, EC Commission president, has pledged to take legal action against France if it does not lift its ban on British beef,

This promise was given after Mr Prodi met Prime Minister Tony Blair during a European Union summit in Tampere, Finland, reported Londons Evening Standard newspaper.

The summit, on Friday, gave Mr Blair the opportunity to threaten legal unilateral action when he had a short and heated meeting with French Prime Minister Lionel Jospin.

Mr Blair made the threat in a frank 10-minute aside with Mr Jospin at the start of the summit.

The Prime Ministers spokesman earlier told the BBC that Mr Blair told Mr Jospin of Britains “considerable anger” at Frances ongoing ban on British beef.
