Producers club together to call the shots
SEVEN well-known farmers in north-east Scotland have clubbed together to form an producer organisation with the ability to dictate market prices.
The Scottish Livestock Initiative on Marketing (SLIM) aims to combat the power of the supermarkets.
SLIM sees a key tool of controlling price in developing the auction system.
It wants to encourage more firms to sell stock as livestock rather than on the hoof.
One initiative that it is trying to develop is to create a national deadweight selling organisation, owned and controlled by the producers.
